Keynote Speaker

Mr. Atul Ojha (Roll number - 3469, DMET Class of 1983-1987), Technical and Operations Senior Director at Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, shared his extensive experience in the industry. Having worked with prestigious companies like The Great Eastern Shipping, British Petroleum, Anglo Eastern, and Mitsui O.S.K Lines, Mr. Ojha provided invaluable insights into the evolving dynamics of the maritime sector.

Welcome Address

The session commenced with an insightful introductory speech by Associate Professor Shri Eswara Arun Kishore, who extended a warm welcome to all attendees, including Mr. Atul Ojha. He highlighted the significance of DMET Samvaad in fostering connections and expressed gratitude to the DMET Club for their collaboration.

Event Highlights

Mr. Ojha’s presentation emphasized the transformative impact of digital technologies and sustainability practices in the maritime industry. He underscored the shift from traditional methods to advanced digital platforms and the critical need to adopt alternative fuels to reduce carbon emissions. He also stressed the importance of updating maritime education to align with these advancements, preparing future professionals for the complexities of modern ship operations and sustainability practices.

Revolutionizing Maritime Operations

Mr. Ojha detailed the transition from conventional paper-based methods to digital solutions, highlighting the role of technologies like IoT and AI in enhancing ship operations and decision-making. He advocated for modernizing maritime education to include environmental sciences, data analytics, and cybersecurity, equipping cadets with the skills necessary to address current challenges in maritime operations.

Effective Use of AI in Marine Engineering

Discussing the role of AI, Mr. Ojha illustrated how AI is revolutionizing marine engineering through advancements in navigation, engine optimization, and safety management. He highlighted the use of data for route planning, fuel efficiency, and maintenance forecasting, emphasizing the shift towards more automated and efficient operations.

Alternative Green Fuels and Sustainable Systems

Mr. Ojha provided an overview of green fuels, discussing the industry's shift towards hybrid and fully electric propulsion systems, and the growing concern for adherence to environmental regulations. He highlighted the skills required for managing and operating these new fuel systems, stressing the importance of reducing emissions.

Assessing Marine Engineer Competence

The assessment of marine engineer competence was also discussed, with Mr. Ojha describing both current and future evaluation methods. He emphasized the need for simulation-based assessments and continuous competency monitoring, incorporating soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, and leadership. 

The session concluded with discussions on operational innovations and digital tools that are revolutionizing ship efficiency and sustainability. Mr. Ojha emphasized the dual approach of balancing digital skills with sustainable practices, driving the industry towards an environmentally friendly and technologically advanced future.

Cadets had the opportunity to engage with Mr. Ojha, asking questions about innovations and crew performance metrics. Discussions included the successful implementation of innovation, keeping maritime training institutes’ curricula up-to-date, and real-life examples of digital technologies impacting crew productivity and safety.

At its peak, around 135 participants attended the session live, ranging from former cadets to current cadets.

Cadet Prerona Ghosh (Roll number 9441, DMET Class of 2021-2025) delivered a heartfelt Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to Mr. Atul Ojha, Associate Professor Shri Eswara Arun Kishore, and the founders and core members of DMET Samvaad.

The session came to a close with a photograph in the breakout rooms.

Conclusion

The 35th session of DMET Samvaad highlighted the importance of cultivating digital and engine technology skills among cadets and seafarers. It emphasized how digital advancements are transforming maritime operations, focusing on sustainability and effective crew management.
