In the world of merchant shipping, few individuals manage to balance the hands-on expertise of sea life with the patience and vision of an educator. Mohit Madhav, DMET Roll Number 6634, Class of 2013, is one such inspiring personality — a Chief Engineer by profession, a mentor by passion, and now, a dedicated maritime educator shaping the future of marine engineering in India.
Having spent over 12 years sailing aboard oil tankers, chemical tankers, and container ships, Mohit has recently taken an active break from sailing to focus full-time on what he believes is his next mission — training the next generation of marine engineers and helping them not only pass exams, but understand the soul of the profession.
🌊 A Voyage Through Engine Rooms and Beyond

Mohit’s journey began at the Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata, where he graduated in 2013. From his early days as a cadet to his rise as Chief Engineer aboard massive container vessels (4400–5551 TEU), his experience is packed with real-world insights that can't be learned from textbooks alone.
Sailing with Fleet Management Ltd., Shipping Corporation of India, and Seven Islands Shipping Ltd., he has managed:
Sulzer RTA Series Main Engines
Auxiliary engines including YANMAR and HIMSEN
Dry docking operations and emergency repairs
SIRE, AMSA, and USCG inspections
Full-scale risk assessments and machinery audits
Crew leadership, technical training, and inventory control
⛴️ From Sailing to Shaping Futures: A New Mission Ashore
After a decade-long tenure at sea, Mohit felt a deeper calling — to give back to the profession by shaping those who will carry the torch forward. In 2024, he made a conscious decision to pause active sailing and redirect his energy toward maritime education and mentorship.
“The sea taught me everything I know. Now it’s time I teach others how to navigate it.”– Mohit Madhav
This transition isn’t a retirement — it’s a strategic pivot. With the maritime world undergoing rapid technological shifts, there is a growing need for practical training, real-life case-based education, and personalized mentorship — areas where Mohit now focuses his full attention.
🧭 A Trusted Mentor with Real-World Perspective
Over the years, Mohit has guided more than 100+ MEO Class I & II aspirants through their oral and written exams, dry-dock assignments, and initial sailing experiences. His training style is highly appreciated because:
It’s based on first-hand experience from engine rooms
It includes mock orals, structured study plans, and exam strategy
It integrates live examples from recent inspections and machinery issues
It develops not just technical knowledge but professional judgment
His unique ability to explain tough engineering concepts in a simple, relatable way has helped countless young officers step into their roles with confidence and competence.
