Preserving the Legacy of DMET: A Commitment to the Future
I am Prateek Khanna, Founder of DMET Club, and it is with great pride that I share an exciting milestone in our journey. As we prepare to travel to Singapore Maritime Week 2025 and the DMET-MERI Alumni Meet (Organised by DMET-MERI Alumni Singapore), we celebrate a significant achievement—DMET Club has surpassed 8,000+ members in under two years(18 months)! This rapid growth highlights the strength of our community, our shared values, and our unwavering commitment to the maritime industry.
From March 26 to April 13, 2025, my team and I will be in Singapore, not only to participate in these prestigious events but also to undertake a mission of paramount importance: documenting the journeys of DMET alumni from all walks of life. This initiative, spanning text, video, and audio formats, is designed to create a lasting historical record of the contributions made by DMETians worldwide.
Why Preserving the DMET Legacy Matters
DMET (MERI/IMU) has shaped generations of maritime professionals, many of whom have gone on to lead, innovate, and redefine the global shipping and logistics landscape. However, DMETians are not only at the forefront of maritime excellence—they have also made significant strides in technology, sports, entrepreneurship, healthcare, and numerous other industries. The experiences of our alumni—whether they have led vessels, managed shipping enterprises, developed cutting-edge technologies, or founded successful startups—are invaluable.
These stories form the foundation of our legacy, and it is our responsibility to document them for the benefit of future generations.
This initiative is not merely about celebrating achievements; it is about creating an accessible, inspirational, and educational repository for cadets and young professionals. By chronicling the real-world experiences, challenges, and triumphs of our seniors, we offer a roadmap for aspiring maritime professionals and beyond. The lessons drawn from these narratives will help guide the next generation as they navigate their careers, equipping them with practical knowledge, motivation, and a deep appreciation for the path laid by their predecessors.
Honouring Every DMETian—Past and Present
One of the core principles that we believe in DMET Club is inclusivity. Every DMETian’s story deserves to be told—without exception. This includes not only those who have excelled in their fields but also those who have faced setbacks and challenges. We will also be documenting the stories of our fallen DMETians by reaching out to their families, preserving their contributions, and ensuring that their legacies are honoured. This aspect of the initiative is particularly important, as it allows us to recognize and appreciate every individual who has been part of this esteemed institution.
A Call to DMET Alumni in Singapore
If you are a DMET alumnus based in Singapore, we would love to connect with you, hear your story, and include you in this project. Your experiences, insights, and wisdom will serve as invaluable assets for cadets and young professionals seeking to build successful careers not just in the maritime sector but across various domains.
This initiative is more than just documentation—it is about preserving and perpetuating the DMET legacy. Through this effort, we aim to compile what can only be described as the ‘Bible of DMETians’—a comprehensive resource that will serve as an enduring tribute to the 10,000+ DMETians who have shaped the maritime world and beyond. One day, this archive may even take the form of a published volume, a testament to the strength, resilience, and leadership of DMET graduates across generations.
Building the Future of Leadership Across Industries
The maritime industry is at a crossroads, with technological advancements, regulatory changes, and global economic shifts reshaping the landscape. In such a dynamic environment, the need for strong leadership, institutional memory, and mentorship is greater than ever. But beyond maritime, DMETians are making their mark in technology, AI, finance, healthcare, aviation, and many more industries, leveraging their technical and leadership skills to drive innovation and change.
By documenting and sharing the stories of DMETians, we are ensuring that future generations have access to the wisdom and experiences of those who came before them.
This initiative will serve as a bridge between the past, present, and future, fostering a continuous cycle of learning, adaptation, and growth.
Why Am I Doing This?
Many have asked me what I gain from this initiative aka DMET Club. The truth is, I owe everything in my life—my successes, my resilience, and my very survival—to DMET and the DMETians who stood by me when I needed them the most.
I have been a selfish entrepreneur, focused on building and rebuilding my ventures, often neglecting the community that had given me so much. However, life has a way of teaching us profound lessons. I survived three paralytic strokes (From 2021 to 2023), and during my weakest moments, the DMET community—whom I had largely overlooked—was there for me, offering unwavering support.
Life is fleeting, and I may not be here forever. But when I reflect on what I want to be remembered for, I know this: I want to be known as the person who made a Herculean attempt to reunite DMETians—or at least died trying.
Many also ask why DMET Club is a private platform. The answer is simple: I am an entrepreneur, and I understand that success requires rapid decision-making. Running a structured, open organisation might slow down our ability to act decisively. This is why we have built the DMET Club in a way that allows us to move with agility, ensuring that we can achieve our ambitious goals without bureaucratic delays.
And in case anyone wonders what happens to my wealth when I am gone—I have already willed everything to DMET & running of DMET Club, leaving aside what is necessary for my family. This is my way of giving back to the institution that shaped me, supported me, and, ultimately, defined me.
While we always needed the a backing of an association DMECA (HQ: Mumbai) is something
The Road Ahead
I have never openly shared why I am doing what I am doing. But as we take the next step in DMET Club's journey, it is essential to put this into perspective. I am not backing down, nor is my team, nor is DMECA—the association that stands firmly behind this mission(With Uday Sir DMECA President & Mudit Sir DMECA Secretary leading the pack).
We will not stop until every DMETian, past and present, is connected and united.
Join Us in This Endeavour
As we embark on this important mission, I invite all DMETians to contribute. Share your stories, insights, and experiences. Together, let’s create a legacy that will inspire, educate, and guide the leaders of tomorrow—not just in maritime, but in every industry where DMETians continue to shine.
See you in Singapore!
