Bonds, Boundaries, and Brotherhood: A Celebration of Cricket at the DMET Alumni Association Hong Kong Annual Cricket Sixes Tournament 2025

Hong Kong | March 22, 2025 – Against the vibrant backdrop of early spring in Hong Kong, the DMET Alumni Association came together for its signature annual sporting event — the Cricket Sixes Tournament 2025. The day was a spectacular fusion of sportsmanship, nostalgia, and togetherness, as over 200 alumni and their families gathered to participate, cheer, and relive memories from their days at sea and in the classrooms of their beloved alma mater.

What began as a simple alumni gathering a few years ago has now grown into a much-anticipated event in the DMET calendar. This year’s tournament, however, was extra special — not only for the thrilling matches and large turnout but also for the emotional tributes and new traditions that took root.

⚓ The Teams and the Spirit

The tournament featured six spirited teams, each named after iconic inventors and engineers — Bose, Diesel, Edison, Froude, Marconi, and Newton. These teams, composed of alumni from different batches and backgrounds, exemplified the deep camaraderie that defines the DMET brotherhood.

The matches, though competitive, were played in great spirit. There were no professional stakes involved — only pride, banter, and the joy of playing under the sun with shipmates who once sailed together. The outfield echoed with laughter, cheers, and the rhythmic beat of leather on willow as players showcased not just their cricketing skills but also their enduring friendships.

Adding a heartwarming touch to the day was a special family match, where ladies and children took to the pitch. Their enthusiastic participation served as a reminder that the DMET community is not limited to its alumni alone, but includes their families who have stood by them through the highs and lows of life at sea.

🏆 The Trophies and the Triumphs

While every team played with heart, three stood out on the scorecard:

  • 🏅 Diesel, led by Puneet Bhardwaj (Roll 5537, Class of 2005), clinched the prestigious “Winners Trophy”, dominating the tournament with flair and finesse.

  • 🥈 Edison, under the leadership of Pankaj Thakur (Roll 5902, Class of 2008), secured the “Plate Trophy”, showcasing consistency and tactical brilliance.

  • 🥉 Froude, captained by the seasoned Rajesh Singh (Roll 3829, Class of 1992), earned the “Bowl Trophy”, proving that experience on and off the field still counts.

🌟 Honouring a Legacy – Deepak Kumar Memorial

This year, the DMET community paid a solemn yet beautiful tribute to one of its own — Deepak Kumar (Roll 3985, Class of 1993), who tragically passed away on December 7, 2024. Known for his infectious energy, sportsmanship, and warmth, Deepak had been an integral part of past tournaments.

In his memory, the “Player of the Tournament” award was renamed the Deepak Memorial Trophy. It was a gesture that resonated deeply with everyone present — a way to ensure that Deepak’s legacy lives on in every run scored and wicket taken in the years to come.

This year, the trophy was awarded to Puneet Bhardwaj, not only for his excellent leadership but also for his all-round performance that led Diesel to victory.
